Are you wishing you could be playing board games in person with your friends? You're not the only one. Being able to sit around a table with friends is a great way to socialize with fellow gamers, and would normally be a popular activity in the CVGA. Playing board games in person is definitely preferred, but circumstances like quarantine, geography or other factors can make this difficult. And thanks to technology, it's not the only way to enjoy them. The Online Games page on our research guide lists several online platforms that can be used to play board games online with friends. Today, we're going to review one of those platforms, Boardgame Arena.
The mission of the University of Michigan Library’s Computer and Video Game Archive (CVGA) is to preserve and provide access to games for current and future study and research. In a world where digital games are becoming more prevalent than physical games, preserving these digital games can be a challenge. The CVGA recently received special funding from the library to purchase a large number (approx. 180) of games from Limited Run Games, a "publisher of limited run physical games for PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch," that focuses on "bringing games that were previously only available in a digital format to a physical medium."
The Spring semester has kicked off and orientation season is in full swing, so we thought it would be a good time to showcase our collection of games here at the CVGA. Here are a few visualizations for our collection of more than 8,000 video games, board games, game soundtracks, and more.
As part of our 10th anniversary, we're pleased to share with you a timeline of events and milestones that have shaped and highlighted our collection and services over the years. Also, a reminder that we will be having a party on Friday, November 16th from 3-5pm in the Duderstadt Center basement area (just outside the archive space) to continue the celebrations.
Are you a fan of games, but not the electronic kind? Much of our collection of over 7,000 games does consist of computer and video games, but we also have over 200 board games that can be played within the CVGA space. We also have over 100 tabletop role-playing books available, featuring many different game systems. These books can be borrowed for up to 3 days at a time.

In the Computer & Video Game Archive, 2017 proved to be a popular year for game genres across the board, including sports, first-person shooters, fighting games and racing games. As a comparison, 2018 is so far proving to be the year of the Nintendo Switch, as well as a game called Fortnite, which is quickly climbing the ranks amongst the most popular games of the year in the archive. The question is, will it become popular enough to beat out FIFA, the game series that has topped out our lists for the past several years?

To welcome everyone back to the university for the Winter term, we wanted to highlight some of the most popular games in our collection, including the latest PlayStation VR and board games. Feel free to check them out at your leisure!
A professor teaching a class this semester that frequently meets in the CVGA has been making good use of our Assassin's Creed games in his class, so we've decided to fill in our collection, purchasing some Assassin's Creed titles that haven't been as highly requested in the CVGA, but still add to the series.
The heat wave we're having outside is the perfect time to hang out in the air-conditioned CVGA to check out the new games that just arrived for the PlayStation VR that we got towards the end of the Winter term.
If you’re familiar with the video gaming community you may know that Final Fantasy XV came out yesterday, 10 years after the announcement was first made. What you may not know is that we here at the CVGA have many of the original games in the series.
