Join us tomorrow (Nov. 13) for a film screening and discussion on China-Africa connection

The China Ongoing Perspectives (CHOP) film series will present the documentary film Made in Ethiopia (2024, 91 min) at Hatcher Gallery on Thursday, November 13.

Filmed over four years with singular access, Made in Ethiopia follows three women's search for prosperity as Chinese factory complexes expand in rural Ethiopia and explores how their faith in industrialization is tested to the limit. The post-film Q&A session will feature Director Xinyan Yu (via Zoom) and Professor Kelly Askew (in person), U-M Professor of Anthropology and Afroamerican & African Studies.

Time: Thursday, November 13, 2025, 6:00-8:15 pm

Location: Hatcher Gallery Event Space (Hatcher Library North, First Floor, Room 100)

Movie dialogues in Chinese, Amharic, English, and Oromo, with English subtitles. Free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Established in 2018, the CHOP film series is co-sponsored by the U-M Asia Library and the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies (LRCCS). Yung-hui Chou, our new Chinese Studies Librarian, has joined Carol Stepanchuk (Outreach Coordinator of LRCCS) and Liangyu Fu (Director of Asia Library) in co-organizing the CHOP series. Welcome Yung-hui!
