This lecture serves as the keynote for the one-day conference: Mapping Austen's World: Movement tand Journeys in the 19th Century, co-sponsored by the University of Michigan Library and the Nineteenth-Century Forum in honor of the 200th Anniversary of Jane Austen. Even if you cannot make it to the conference, please do attend this talk. The keynote is open to everyone - no registration is needed!
Dr. Miranda Burgess is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of British Columbia. She specializes in British and Irish Romantic poetry and prose and in the history and theory of feeling, mobility, media/mediation, and literary form. Her first book, British Fiction and the Production of Social Order, 1740-1830, focused on genre and the mediation of emergent theories of nation-ness. Her current book project, Romantic Transport, 1790-1830 draws on migration and mobility studies, medical history and the history of sensation, and the history of form and figuration.
