Join us to celebrate 150 years of artistic exploration of Lewis Carroll's Wonderland on Monday, September 21, 4:00-5:30 p.m in Hatcher Gallery. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass had a profound effect on the history of book illustration. Carroll's masterpieces came to be among the most known, respected, republished, analyzed, parodied, abridged, appropriated, and adapted works of literature in the world, and countless artists have been drawn to the complexities of the text. No other books (save perhaps the Bible) have been such an inspiration for illustrators.
Learn more about the artistic, textual, and cultural history of Alice illustration from Arnold Hirshon, avid Carroll collector and Associate Provost and University Librarian at Case Western Reserve University. Refreshments will include tea & coffee, accompanied by cupcakes (don't worry - they won't make you grow!).
The 7th floor exhibit space will be open both prior to the event and from 5:30-6. Attendees are encouraged to walk upstairs afterwards to enjoy the exhibit. All are welcome!
