As part of the University’s Fall 2023 Festival of Asian Music, the CHOP (China Ongoing Perspectives) film series will be showing AnDa Union: From the Steppes to the City, at 6 PM on November 16 on the 10th floor of Weiser Hall (500 Church Street). The 93-minute film will be followed by a Q&A session with U-M Assistant Professor Sangseraima Ujeed, who helped with its subtitling. Light refreshments will be served.
AnDa Union, a group of ten musicians from the Xilingol Grassland area of Inner Mongolia, is part of a musical movement that finds inspiration in old and forgotten music from the nomadic herdsman cultures of Inner and Outer Mongolia, which it blends with modern musical styles to create a unique sound. The film shows them making a 10,000-kilometer journey through the grasslands, revealing the roots of their haunting and beautiful music.
The CHOP film series is co-sponsored by Asia Library and the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies.
