The China Ongoing Perspectives (CHOP) film series, co-sponsored by the Lieberthal Rogel Center for Chinese Studies (LRCCS) and Asia Library, entered its second year in the midst of a pandemic. We responded, in both content and form, by streaming the documentary Long Time No See Wuhan to a virtual audience of some 100 viewers on September 30, after which a question-and-answer session was led by Lan Deng, associate director of LRCCS and associate professor, Taubman College of Architecture and Planning. We didn’t record the discussion, but the film remains freely available on YouTube. It follows the stories of ten families in Wuhan, where the coronavirus was first detected, as residents process their experiences of the outbreak during and after the COVID-19 lockdown. The 61-minute documentary is narrated in Japanese with conversation in Mandarin; both Chinese and English subtitles are available. The next offering in the CHOP series is a film that takes a compelling look at Alzheimer’s disease in China.
