My 3D Printing and Laser Cutting Journey at the Design Lab

Front view of Hello Kitty

A few weeks ago, I printed Hello Kitty models as a personal project. The staff were so helpful and patient with me trying to figure out the best way to print and explained which supports are best suitable for which purposes. This project and their helpfulness made me want to do so many more projects!

Front view of cookie cutters

I printed Sanrio cookie cutters at the Design Lab. I originally wanted to print many more designs, but we had trouble fitting everything into one appointment. While printing, the printer constantly ran into issues with the file, causing us to start from the beginning. Despite these troubles, the staff were so patient and even offered to reprint everything if needed!

Front view of LABUBU

I 3D printed a Labubu model as a gift. The original file had the body parts separate, so we had to print the body and the attachments on separate printers. The scaling for the body parts was also wonky, which took us a while to figure out. Despite these troubles, the staff were so helpful and flexible in accommodating complex files like this.

front view of brush holder

This is a brush holder which has an opening at the back (not visible in the photo). Due to that opening, the staff and I discussed the difficulty of removing the supports after printing, but with the printing tools at the Design Lab, it wasn’t a huge problem. Thanks as always to the kind and supportive staff!

Cake keycaps front view

These are cake keycaps for a keyboard. The original files were too high in resolution, so the staff patiently walked me through the process of simplifying the files without losing quality. The finished product looks and works great!

Harry Potter Book Nook Front View

I laser printed a Harry Potter Book Nook. This was my first time laser printing, but the staff walked me through each step. As each panel was large, we had to split up the printing into two different sessions, and the staff even ordered more wood panels. The entire design took less than 2 hours total to print!
