Support and Resources at a Troubling Time

In the wake of the deplorable rise in violence against Asians and Asian Americans, there has been an outpouring of support and sharing of information about resources to help those affected by this. Here we repost and link to messages shared within the University of Michigan.

From The University of Michigan Library Diversity Council

The Library Diversity Council supports our Asian and Asian American and Pacific Islander colleagues.

Over the past year there has been increased anti-Asian violence in the United States with another violent and deadly attack yesterday evening. Racism is violent and insidious, and it impacts the emotional and physical wellbeing of those that experience racism. LDC would like to recognize that this increase in violence adds additional stress and emotional duress to our colleagues of Asian descent. We ask our Library colleagues to please be supportive of our Asian and Asian American colleagues and community members. Also, please consider non-Asian staff that may be impacted if they have family members or loved ones of Asian descent. It is our responsibility to uplift and support people who are under duress. We want to especially ask supervisors and managers to please be understanding at this time. This Washington Post article “As schools reopen, Asian American students are missing from classrooms” can help with understanding the anxieties experienced by our colleagues. We will continue to consider other avenues of support, and welcome thoughts and ideas about how you would like LDC to show up in this space.

There have been several organizations that have put out messages of acknowledgement and support:

APALA Statement Against Anti-Asian Violence

CALA Statement

U-M APID/A Staff Association Statement on Anti-Asian Violence
