We are excited to share that Yung-hui Chou (周永蕙) has joined the Asia Library as our new Chinese Studies Librarian. Her first day was Monday, May 19, 2025. Yung-hui is responsible for Chinese studies collection development, providing research services to the interdisciplinary Chinese Studies community across the campus, and working closely with the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies (LRCCS) on various initiatives.
Yung-hui earned her MSLIS degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2025, where she served as an assistant for East Asian collections and services at the International and Area Studies Library. Prior to pursuing librarianship, Yung-hui held various roles in the field of Chinese Studies. She received her BA and MA degrees in Chinese Literature from National Taiwan University and completed PhD coursework in the Asian Literature, Religion, and Culture program at Cornell University. Her primary research area is the literature and historiography of medieval China, with recent interests expanding to include the history of writing and books in pre-modern East Asia. She has also worked as a research assistant at Academia Sinica in Taiwan and taught as a language instructor at Colorado College.
Although being on the new job for only less than a week, Yung-hui has already started to address the broad research profile of the LRCCS community and the new trends in Chinese studies librarianship, while demonstrating a thoughtful approach to collection development and responding to patron requests. She has also impressed all of us with her quick learner skills and willingness to engage in partnerships.
In her free time, Yung-hui enjoys reading and visiting bookstores, museums, and libraries. She collects library postcards and items featuring Labrador retriever patterns. She is excited to move to Ann Arbor and looks forward to discovering more about Michigan's cities and natural landscapes.
