This Wednesday's watermark comes to us from the Islamic Manuscripts Collection - one of the papers in Isl. Ms. 564 to be exact.
It features a crown-star-crescent motif commonly encountered in manuscripts produced in the former lands of the Ottoman Empire during the 16th-18th centuries. Our manuscript, for example, was produced in Yemen and transcribed during the year 1679.
Under the scheme elaborated by Mošin and Grozdanovic-Pajié [1], this particular motif would be considered a Type VIII crown-star-crescent.
p.51 from Vladimir Mošin and M. Grozdanovic-Pajié's "Das Wasserzeichen ‘Krone mit Stern und Halbmond.'"
A different watermark of the same type appears elsewhere in the volume.
Another Type VIII crown-star-crescent watermark in the papers of Isl. Ms. 564
Can you spot the differences between the two?
